  • DESCRIPTION: This finely executed Revolutionary War–period engraving, published in England in 1780, portrays Esek Hopkins (1718–1802), the first and only Commander-in-Chief of the American Continental Navy. The print was issued in An Impartial History of the War in America, Between Great Britain and Her Colonies (London & Carlisle, 1780), where it appeared on page 310. Misidentified as “Robert” Hopkins, the portrait depicts the Commodore standing on shore with naval vessels in the distance, one hand resting on his sword hilt and a pair of pistols tucked into his belt.

  • CONDITION: Good condition. Tiny repaired chip in the lower left margin.
