  • DESCRIPTION: This scarce lifetime mezzotint of Israel Puttnam. Major General dans Fortresses de la Province Connecticut, et Commandant en chef de l'Expedition a Bunkers-Hill pres de Boston le 17. Juin 1776. Se vend a Londres chez Thom. Hart is a Continental reworking of the famous Bunker Hill portrait of Israel Putnam issued in London during the early years of the Revolution. Closely related to the English mezzotint after J. Wilkinson, engraved by Johann Martin Will and published by C. Shepherd in 1775, it recasts Putnam for a French-reading audience as the resolute commander of the American forces at Bunker Hill, the action that made his reputation and gave rise to the legendary order “Dont fire until you see the whites of their eyes.”
