DESCRIPTION: Samuel Huntington (1731–1796) was a Connecticut statesman whose long public career spanned the Revolution and the early Republic. A self-taught lawyer who rose from modest beginnings, he served as a delegate to the Continental Congress and became its President in 1779, guiding the body through some of the most difficult years of the war. As a signer of the Declaration of Independence, he helped give formal voice to the colonies’ break with Britain. After returning to Connecticut, Huntington served as lieutenant governor and then governor from 1786 until his death, overseeing the state’s transition into the new federal system and supporting the adoption of the U.S. Constitution. Throughout his life, he was regarded as steady, practical, and deeply committed to public duty.
