DESCRIPTION: A 19th-century view of one of the locks along the newly constructed Illinois & Michigan Canal, captured as a wood engraving and handcolored to highlight the details.

The Illinois & Michigan Canal, constructed between 1836 and 1848, created a vital transportation corridor by linking Lake Michigan to the Illinois River, which in turn connected to the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico. This 96-mile canal, inspired by the success of the Erie Canal, enabled a continuous all-water route that significantly boosted trade and travel. By allowing goods and passengers to move seamlessly from the Great Lakes through the Midwest to the Gulf, the canal reduced travel time and costs, enhancing economic growth and establishing Illinois as a crucial nexus in the nation's transportation network.
