This Plate is most respectfully dedicated by his Lordship's most devoted and obedient humble Servant. F. G. Byron"

The Daredevil Aeronaut

Vincenzo Lunardi (1754–1806) was a pioneering Italian aeronaut.

Vincent Lunardi and his partner George Biggin together decided to demonstrate a hydrogen balloon flight at the Artillery Ground of the Honourable Artillery Company in London on September 15th, 1784.

The 200,000-strong crowd (which included the Prince of Wales) had grown impatient, the young Italian had to take off without Biggin, and with a bag that was not completely inflated; he was accompanied by a dog, a cat and a caged pigeon. The flight from the Artillery Ground travelled roughly 24 miles in two and a half hours eventually landing in Standon Green End.

After this celebrated event, the partially inflated balloon was hung in the Pantheon for a public view. During this event the scene was recorded by the artist F.G. Byron. The print was engraved by Francis Jukes and Valentine Green.
