DESCRIPTION: Considered one of the greatest American poets, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s magnificent prose shaped the history of American literature. Longfellow’s work ranged from sentimental pieces to highly academic translations of Dante. His most celebrated works include the narrative poem “Evangeline” and “The Song of Hiawatha” which has become an American classic. Longfellow’s magnificent prose created a new body of romantic American legends which shapes the core of American literature. Some of his most famous phrases, such as “ships that pass in the night”, “the patter of little feet”, and “I shot an arrow into the air” are still commonly used today. This etching is signed in pencil in the lower right by the artist. Unfortunately, we can not decipher his name.
