  • DESCRIPTION: This portrait of O-Hya-Wa-Mince-Kee, a Chippeway (Ojibwe) chief, is from the Rice, Rutter & Co. octavo edition of McKenney and Hall’s monumental work documenting Native American leaders of the early 19th century. Based on Charles Bird King’s original oil painting executed in Washington, D.C., the image captures the dignity and composure of the sitter, richly adorned with traditional dress and ornaments. The Rice, Rutter & Co. edition, produced in Philadelphia during the late 1850s and 1860s, preserved the vivid coloration and fine lithography of the earlier Bowen printings while bringing these remarkable likenesses to a wider audience.
