DESCRIPTION: This mezzotint, engraved by Charles Spooner after a 1759 painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds, beautifully captures the vibrant youth and elegance of Lady Selina Hastings (1737–1763). The daughter of Theophilus Hastings, 9th Earl of Huntingdon, and Selina Shirley, Countess of Huntingdon, she belonged to one of England’s most distinguished noble families. Her mother, a prominent figure in the Methodist revival, dedicated her life to religious and educational causes.

Though Lady Selina’s life was tragically brief—she passed away at just 25—this portrait radiates the vitality and charm of a young woman full of promise. The mezzotint is a rare gem, with deep, velvety blacks and exceptional detail, preserved in remarkably pristine condition for its age.

Printed on fine laid paper, this mezzotint stands out as a distinct example, differing from any closely matched copies identified online or in the references provided by Chaloner, Smith, and Russell.
