This is slightly larger and the portrait faces to the left. Simon Snyder (1759-1819) became Pennsylvania’s first governor of German descent. He began his career in politics as a justice of the peace, and in 1789 was elected as a delegate to the state convention that revised Pennsylvania’s constitution. From 1797 to 1807 he served in the State House of Representatives and was elected three times as its speaker. Highly regarded by the Jeffersonians, Snyder was selected to run against Governor McKean, whose autocracy and incompetence had lost him the support of the party. Relatively unknown, Snyder failed to defeat Mckean who remained in office. In 1808 Snyder was elected governor when he defeated the Federalist John Ross. He easily won re-elections against William Tilgman and Isaac Wayne. As governor, Snyder supported the War of 1812 by sending the full force of the state militia to the fight. In 1818 he was elected to the U. S. senate but he died in 1819 of typhoid fever.
