DESCRIPTION: Considered one of the most accomplished English officers to fight in the American War of Independence, Henry Edward Fox (1755-1811) was involved in almost every major battle of the Revolution. The brother of Charles James Fox, the infamous Jacobite politician, Henry began his military career in the king’s dragoon guards.

In 1773, he was promoted to a lieutenant in the 38th regiment, which was quartered in Boston. He served as captain throughout the Revolution and was present at almost every major battle of the war. He served at Concord, Bunker Hill, the battles on Long Island and White Plains, the battle of Brandywine, and the advance on Philadelphia. In 1778 he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel of the 38th, and continued to serve in America until the end of the war.

Upon his return to England, he was made aides-de-camp to George III in recognition of his bravery and devotion. It is interesting to note that while Henry Fox was one of England’s most dedicated soldier’s in the colonies; his brother was one of the most outspoken opponents of the War. Fox continued to serve in the army and distinguished himself further by repulsing the entire French army at Pont-a-Chin.

Later he served as the governor of Gibraltar and as the ambassador to Naples. This is a stunning impression of Charles Turner’s superb mezzotint of Henry Fox. Pictured, as Governor of Gibraltar, the image is not only a fine likeness of this great soldier, but a wonderful example of Turner’s unique talents.
