DESCRIPTION: After a painting by Edward Savage, engraver not identified, presumably Edward Savage. One of the great "lifetime" portraits of the first president..

There are several variations of this famous portrait. This appears to be Wick #34, Hart #229. Hart list it as an unknown engraver although the plate is not as course as the typical “unknown” engraver listed. This mezzotint is from Edward Savage's painting that is currently at Harvard University. In Washington's hands is an early map of the new United States Capital which bears his name. In the book, "George Washington, An American Icon" Wendy Wick notes that Savage probably produced another version of the plate which has a "slightly coarser grain and is not as smoothly executed." Also there is some controversy over weather Savage engraved the image at all as it was “The portrait of Washington may indeed look like an English mezzotint partly because Savage was materially assisted by an English engraver.”
