  • DESCRIPTION: From the PORTRAIT GALLERY OF DISTINGUISHED AMERICAN CITIZENS. Brown cut his silhouettes from life and then added details to the scene that were connected to the distinguished citizen's persona. <BR><BR> Silas Wright, Jr. was born in Amherst, Mass., May 24, 1795, and moved to Wyebridge, Vt., in 1796 with his family. He studied at Middlebury College graduating in 1815 and moved to Canton, New York. He was elected to the State Senate 1824-27. He served in the U.S. Senate from 1833 to 1844 and then as Governor of the state of New York from 1844-1846. He died in Canton, New York on August 27, 1847.
