Engraved from the Original Picture in the possession of Mr. Henry Graves, and dedicated to the chairmen, directors, and shareholders, of the railway companies of Great Britain. The setting for this exciting and tumultuous departure scene is London's Paddington Station. Frith had mastered the depiction of groups within crowds, and here combines a family sending its two sons off to school, a foreigner haggling over cabfare, a wedding party making its goodbyes, even a fleeing criminal being arrested. More than 20,000 viewers paid to see Frith's painting during its first seven weeks of exhibition. The engraving is one of the world's great genre prints and an important railroad picture as well.
