  • DESCRIPTION: 120 lithographic plates by J. T. Bowen mostly after the paintings of Charles Bird King with notes and histories by Thomas L McKenney and James Hall. The Charles Bird King paintings were destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865, making the McKenney & Hall lithographs important documents of American Indians. This is the third octave edition, 10 1/4 x 6 3/4 inches. The first four editions of this work were printed by J. T. Bowen. <BR><BR>Binding is the publisher’s brown blind-stamped morocco, spine in six compartments with five raised bands, lettered in gilt, yellow end papers and gilt edges. Plates are in full color original color. <BR><BR>Thomas L. McKenney was appointed by President James Monroe in 1824 as the first director of the Office of Indian Affairs. He is known to have improved the administration of Indian programs, he also traveled to negotiate treaties with the Indian tribes. He was dismissed in 1830 from his post by President Andrew Jackson. McKenney immediately turned his attention to writing about the American Indians as he was concerned for their survival. Within a few years he was joined by James Hall, a lawyer from Cincinnati, Ohio who had written about the west.
