  • DESCRIPTION: Commander of a Squadron in the Service of the Thirteen United States of North America 1779. Scarce anonymous English mezzotint engraving of America’s first great naval hero, c. 1779. (The drawing is sometimes attributed to Richard Brookshaw. The German engraver Johann Haid used the same portrait for his own mezzotint.) Jones is depicted three-quarter length, in uniform, holding a telescope in his right arm. To the rear are a towering cliff and a burning ship. Jones is considered America’s most famous naval hero even though the British called him a pirate because of his raids along the Irish coast. His greatest victory was the capture of the British Serapis by his flagship Bonhomme Richard in 1779. [Olds, Bits & Pieces, 457] Black and white.
