Both show a would-be prospector laden down with every tool he could possibly need. Kellogg’s hopeful includes a large valise. The sign reads “To St. Louis 350 Miles, To California 1700 Miles.” In this version, the man holds a suitcase in his left hand and a pick-axe is visible just below the spade.
