DESCRIPTION: On stone by A. De Vaudricourt from a sketch by J. C. King, Sculp. Printed by Bouve & Sharp, Boston. Title continues "Is respectifully dedicated by the publishers to the Merchants of Boston who projected and paid for a canal cut in the ice 7 miles long and 100 feet wide. Much credit is due to the committee and to the contractors Messrs Gage. Hettenger & Co. and John Hill for their persverance in accomplishing so arduous an undertaking." This print actually backfired for Boston as it drew attention that Boston harbor occasionally froze. Many shipping companies than sent their ships to New York instead.
ADDITIONAL INFO: Rare early printing of this famous event in Boston. In the 1870's. the image was redrawn on stone and issued again, now printed by Ferd. Mayer. The easiest was to tell the two editions apart is the the re-issue has rounded upper corners.
