  • DESCRIPTION: Lith. & print by Chas Magnus, 12 Frankfort St. N.Y.<br><br> The area shown in this lithograph is located in current day Georgetown. The Cliffburne barracks started off as a training ground for U.S. army cavalry. In i862 it was taken over by the Invalid Corps under the direction of Lieutenant Colonel John Shaw Billings.. When Billings took charge of Cliffburne, he found the buildings and grounds “in an extremely filthy and dilapidated condition,” with no drainage and no water within half a mile. In order to be used as a hospital, additional buildings had to be added, along with 105 hospital tents, The hospital grew to become one of the largest in the district and treated both Unions and Confederate soldiers.
