  • DESCRIPTION: The Oxford Street Pantheon was opened in January 1772 for a 'social' evening entertainment. The room depicted is off the rotunda, which is said to have been designed after Santa Sophia. This splendid structure was well received and frequented for many years and then turned to dramatic performances. In 1792 it was devastated by fire and then rebuilt. This structure was demolished in 1937. The details in this print are interesting and give one a sense of what it was like to be there - the organ (pipes), built by John Stretzle, can be seen above musicians playing by candlelight. It looks like people are dancing in the rotunda.
