• DESCRIPTION: Coastal chart of northwest America by Dagelet. From Atlas du Voyage de La Perouse, Paris, 1797. The map extends from Monterey north to Mount St. Elias and dates La Perouse's visit to each site. Among the major landmarks are San Francisco Bay, Cape Mendocino, Cape Blanco, Cape Ronde, Nootka, Cape Hector on Queen Charlotte Island (unnamed), Mt. Crillon and Port des Francais. La Perouse's orders were to chart the northwest coast of America and to determine the extent of the fur trade there. His planned circumnavigation failed when the Astrolabe and the Boussole were wrecked in the New Hebrides in 1788.
