When they landed at plymouth Rock, the Pilgrims found themselves in unknown territory, beyond the limits of the Southern Virginia Charter. A company of 20 men was sent out to explore the bay and its environs. The party spent the night on the new land, and having explored a bit and seen several Indians, prepared to head back to their ship. At this moment, they were besieged by a band of Indians. A few members of the company who had guns began firing, and the Indians were put to flight. One Indian, however, braver than his companions, stood behind a tree and withstood several volleys of shot, all the while discharging arrows, but soon thought it wise to make his escape. This place was commemorated as the site of "The First Encounter."
