DESCRIPTION: The engraving The Chesapeake & Shannon vividly depicts the dramatic naval engagement between the USS Chesapeake and HMS Shannon on June 1, 1813, one of the most memorable battles of the War of 1812. The encounter occurred off the coast of Boston and was notable for its brevity and intensity. Commanded by Captain James Lawrence, the Chesapeake sailed out to meet the Shannon, under the command of Captain Philip Broke, after being taunted into battle.<br><br> The fight lasted a mere 15 minutes, but in that short span, both ships exchanged devastating broadsides. The Chesapeake was quickly overwhelmed by the well-prepared and experienced crew of the Shannon. Despite the bravery of the American sailors, including the mortally wounded Captain Lawrence, who famously uttered the words "Don't give up the ship," the Chesapeake was captured by the British. This engraving captures the ferocity and chaos of the battle, immortalizing a pivotal moment in naval history. The detailed depiction in Abel Bowen's The Naval Monument serves as a powerful visual record of this significant engagement, illustrating the harsh realities of naval warfare during the early 19th century. <br><br> This print is from the 1815 issue.
