Many had never been illustrated before. The engravings have a freshness and simplicity that charms collectors today.<BR><BR> The plate illustrates Rosa gallica, commonly known as the French rose or apothecary’s rose, one of the oldest cultivated rose species in Europe. Long associated with medicinal and herbal use, the plant was valued for its fragrant petals, which were employed in perfumes, syrups, conserves, and traditional remedies for their mild astringent and anti-inflammatory properties.
