  • DESCRIPTION: This engraving originates from Joseph Jakob Plenck’s Icones Plantarum Medicinalium Secundum Systema Linnaei Digestarum, published in Vienna between 1788 and 1812. Devoted to the medicinal properties of European and exotic flora, this work documented species that had often never been illustrated previously. The plate depicts the Dragon Tree (Dracoena Draco), a succulent tree historically valued for the deep red resin—known as "dragon's blood"—used in traditional medicine as an astringent and wound-healing agent. Created using precise copperplate engraving and finished by hand with watercolor, the work provides a clear botanical study of the species' distinctive foliage and structural habit. These engravings, characterized by a distinct freshness and simplicity, remain a significant reference for both botanical collectors and historians of medicinal science.
