Engraved by William Strickland. An important and beautiful view of this Moravian community located at the juncture of Monocacy Creek and the Lehigh River. The town's influence on America's philosophical development was substantial; it also served as temporary home for the Continental Congress. Strickland was an engraver and architect; he designed many Philadelphia public buildings as well as the Tennessee Statehouse. Thomas Birch, son of William, is today better remembered for his marine scenes than his landscapes. This view is an especially fine example of Birch's skill at creating depth. 18th-19th Century Subjects, Town Views - United States
