  • DESCRIPTION: From Emanuel Sweert's "Florilegium Amplissimum et Selectissimum." This was one of the earliest botanical books to serve a secondary purpose as a bulb catalogue. Sweert directed possible buyers to his business addresses in Frankfurt and Amsterdam, though he did not include prices. Sweert was a Dutch florist employed for a time as Praefectus of the garden of Emperor Rudolf II, king of Bohemia and Hungary. In style and arrangement, the flowers are very similar to Basil Besler's, who was Sweert's contemporary.
