This plate includes wheat, barley and grass.

A scarce composite engraving from "The British Herbal" by Dr. John Hill. Published in London, 1756-57.

Dunthorne describes Hill's work as "particularly noteworthy." However, even in botanical reference works, his personal life receives nearly as much attention as his artistic and scientific endeavors. Described variously as "fascinating," "ludicrous" and "slightly eccentric," Hill abandoned his apothecary apprenticeship for gardening, acting, play-writing, tabloid journalism and finally quack-doctoring.

At least some of these life experiences proved useful when he began "The British Herbal." The engravings were supposedly based on original paintings by Hill himself, but more likely are designs modified from earlier herbal works.
