  • DESCRIPTION: This lithograph depicts Wilson Lumpkin (1783–1870), an American politician and attorney who served as the Governor of Georgia from 1831 to 1835 during the era of Indian Removal. As governor, he oversaw the relocation of Creek and Cherokee peoples from their lands. Born in Virginia, Lumpkin moved to Georgia as a child and began his career in law and politics, serving multiple terms in the Georgia House of Representatives, the U.S. House, and the U.S. Senate. He was a member of the Georgia constitutional convention and later chaired the Senate Committee on Manufactures. His legacy includes the naming of Lumpkin County, Georgia, and the town of Marthasville, which eventually became Atlanta.
