DESCRIPTION: Drawn on stone by W. Mitchell from the original painting by H.S. Sheaf in the possession of E. Carter, Esq.

John Pounds, (1766-1839) was born and raised in Portsmouth, England. At the age of twelve, his father arranged for him to apprentice as a shipwright at the royal dockyard. Several later John fell into a dry dock and was badly injured. Unable to work as a shipwright, he became a shoemaker, opening his own shop on St. Mary Street in Portsmouth. Soon after opening he began to teach poor and homeless local children basic reading, writing and arithmetic skills. He also gave lessons in cooking, carpentry and shoemaking. Often he had over 40 children attending his classes. His charitable work gave rise to the concept of ragged schools.
