DESCRIPTION: Lithographed by Geo. Haywood. The North Battery at the foot of Hubert Street was part of the early defensive works that once lined the western shore of Manhattan along the Hudson River. Established in the late eighteenth century and active into the early nineteenth, it formed part of New York’s harbor fortifications intended to guard against naval attack during a period when coastal defense was a constant concern following the Revolution and into the War of 1812 era.
