  • DESCRIPTION: The Brooklyn Athenaeum and Reading Room stands as a testament to the intellectual and cultural ambitions of mid-19th-century Brooklyn. Founded in 1852 by a group of prominent citizens, this stately three-story edifice was located at the northeast corner of Atlantic Avenue and Clinton Street. Designed by architect William Field, the building served as a vital hub for "innocent relaxation" and scholarly pursuit, featuring commercial storefronts on the ground floor, a library and reading room on the second, and a grand 2,000-seat lecture hall on the third. As a precursor to both the Brooklyn Academy of Music and the Brooklyn Public Library, the Athenaeum hosted some of the era's most significant cultural events, including the first concert of the Philharmonic Society of Brooklyn and lectures by renowned abolitionists. This print captures the architectural dignity of the site before it was eventually demolished in 1942.
