  • DESCRIPTION: This mid 19th century wood engraving, published in Ballou's Pictorial, shows the Massachusetts State House during a period of significant architectural expansion. Designed by Charles Bulfinch and completed in 1798, the building required additional space by the 1850s to accommodate the growing state government. This print shows the Bryant Addition, a large fireproof wing designed by architect Gridley J.F. Bryant, constructed between 1853 and 1856.
