  • DESCRIPTION: This finely detailed 18th-century engraving comes from Buffon’s monumental Natural History of Birds. As Director of the Jardin du Roi in France, Buffon pioneered the idea of presenting the natural world as a unified whole. Based on its location and the rich green-and-gold plumage, the bird shown here is likely the Cape Parrot, a rare and striking species native to southern Africa.
