DESCRIPTION: These paired scenes frame one of the worst maritime disasters on the Great Lakes. The Lady Elgin is shown lying quietly at her Chicago wharf on the day before her final voyage, an image of routine lake travel before tragedy struck. Hours later, after a nighttime collision on Lake Michigan, the Lady Elgin sank with heavy loss of life, while the schooner Augusta, damaged but afloat, returned to Chicago.
