The Lady Elgin is shown lying quietly at her Chicago wharf on the day before her final voyage, an image of routine lake travel before tragedy struck. Hours later, after a nighttime collision on Lake Michigan, the Lady Elgin sank with heavy loss of life, while the schooner Augusta, damaged but afloat, returned to Chicago.
