DESCRIPTION: Etched by J.A. Atkinson. From Charles Hamilton Smith's "Selections of the Ancient Costume of Great Britain and Ireland." The plates in this work were based entirely on costumes in Smith's own collections. His purpose was to show that accient costumes, when accurately portrayed, were impressive and beautiful in themselves. Smith's dramatic illustrations are the best proof of his argument.
