  • DESCRIPTION: The steamship City of Montreal caught fire in the Atlantic on August 11 while on a transatlantic voyage, the blaze reportedly starting below decks and spreading quickly through the wooden superstructure. Despite efforts to fight the fire, the flames intensified, forcing passengers and crew to prepare the boats as rigging and spars began to collapse. At about two in the afternoon the mainmast fell, confirming the ship was beyond saving, and the vessel was abandoned at sea. Those on board were later rescued, but the City of Montreal burned until she was completely destroyed, becoming one of the better-known mid-19th-century steamship fires.
