• DESCRIPTION: This hand-colored lithograph is from Curtis's Botanical Magazine by Sir William Jackson Hooker, featured in Volume LXXVI and published by Reeve & Benham, London, in 1850. Begun by William Curtis in 1787, this famous periodical initially featured botanical illustrations as copper engravings by major artists. Under Hooker's direction after 1845, the illustrations transitioned to lithographs, continuing the magazine's tradition of exquisite botanical art.
