  • DESCRIPTION: A detailed 19th-century natural history lithograph published by J. F. Schreiber of Erlangen in 1872, depicting Egyptian wild cats in a desert setting. The principal species represented are the African Wildcat (Felis lybica)—considered the ancestor of the domestic cat—and the Sand Cat (Felis margarita), a smaller desert-dwelling species adapted to arid environments. Both animals are shown with characteristic features: the tawny, striped coat of the African wildcat and the pale fur and rounded ears of the sand cat.
