DESCRIPTION: From John Cassin's "Mammalogy and Ornithology" report of the United States Exploring Expedition under Captain Charles Wilkes. Peale youngest son of painter Charles Wilson Peale, accompanied this landmark naval expedition, which explored South America, Australia, Antartica, the Pacific islands and America's northwest coast between 1838 and 1842. This was the first American circumnavigation of the globe. Engraved by W. H. Dougal. <br><br> Pictured are the Fiji parrotfinch, red-headed parrotfinch, and the blue-black grassquit. <br><br> According to Bennett's "Color Plate Books," only 150 sets of the Cassin report were printed.
