DESCRIPTION: A view of Dejima, a man made island built in the early 17th century to accommodate foreign traders, while attempting to prevent the spread of western religion and other undesirable aspects of western culture. The port limitations were not placed on Europeans alone, however. Chinese traders were also forced to use the port, after the port of Hirado was closed following the construction of Dejima.

This wood engraving was published a year before Commodore Perry forced his way into Japan, opening the country to the West.
