  • DESCRIPTION: Early impression of an Engraving by Augustin de Saint Aubin, after a drawing by Charles Nicolas Cochin. Franklin is depicted facing right, with Canadian fur-trapper hat and round spectacles. The bust-length portrait is enclosed in an oval border; the oval frame and engraved title are held within a rectangular border. The following is what is engraved within the rectangular frame on later prints "C. N. Cochin filius delin. 1777" at bottom left and "Aug. de St. Aubin Sculp." at bottom right. Engraved in the bottom paper margin would be the following: "Dessine par C. N. Cochin Chevalier de l'Ordre du Roi, en 1777 et Grave par Aug. de St. Aubin Graveur de la Bibliotheque du Roi. Se vend a Paris ches C. N. Cochin aux Galleries du Louvre; et ches Aug. de St. Aubin, rue des Mathurins." A "35e" is very finely inscribed at the upper right corner of the later prints, outside the composition. This print was one of the first available French images of Franklin. Publication of this print was first announced in the "Journal de Paris" of June 16, 1777.
