  • DESCRIPTION: A handsome architectural rendering of the late 19th-century enlargement of Battell Chapel, complete with students wearing mortarboard caps and gowns.<br><br> The architect for this addition was Josiah Cleaveland Cady. It is possible that he was the artist for this, as he is known to have produced renderings himself,. It is more likely that it is the work of a staff member. Josiah Cleaveland Cady (1837-1919). American architect best rememberd for his designs in Romanesque and Rundbogenstil styles. He was a prolific architect of late nineteenth and early twentieth century along with his long-term partners, Louis DeCoppet Berg and Milton. Cady designed many celebrated public buildings of the day, including the original Metropolitan Opera House, the American Museum of Natural History in New York, and the Brooklyn Art Association.<br><br> Cady's work was diverse designing residences, churches, colleges, libraries, and museums. Are far as the Yale connection, he designed fifteen buildings for the University. In the early 1890’s. Yale wanted to enlarge the Battell Chapel and reached out to Cady to supply a design. In 1893 The University Magazine (Vol. VIII, No. 1)<br><br> It was noted that “Plans are under consideration for enlarging Battell Chapel at Yale to accommodate the increasing classes. J. C. Cady & Co., of New York planned the enlargement. Peabody and Chittensden, were the architects. The plan makes a two-story addition on the south with a porch 20 ft. square in the southwest corner.”<br><br> The Christian Union. Vol 47 No. 1)<br><br> The enlargement of the Battell Chapel at Yale will add one-third in number to its present one thousand sittings. The work will be done under the supervision of J. C.
