  • DESCRIPTION: This dramatic moonlit scene records one of the greatest American gambling events of the 19th century: the race from New Orleans to St. Louis between the rival steamboats Natchez and Robt. E. Lee. Leaving the Crescent City at 5 p.m. on June 30, 1870, the Robt. E. Lee arrived in St. Louis three days, 18 hours and 14 minutes later--more than six hours ahead of the Natchez. Her time was never equalled.
