• DESCRIPTION: A 19th-century perspective of the Club House, Corner of Beacon and Park Streets, Boston, captured as a wood engraving and handcolored to highlight the details.

In 1855, the "Club House," located at the corner of Beacon and Park Streets in Boston, was a significant landmark. Originally a large single mansion, it had been divided into separate residences. One part of the building was home to Professor Ticknor, a renowned scholar and author, while the other section on Park Street served as the elegant yet modest residence of Hon. Abbott Lawrence. This mansion gained historical importance as it was specially prepared to accommodate General Lafayette and his suite during his visit as a guest of the city. The illustration of the time vividly captures the grandeur of the block and its architectural beauty.
