Ten ships are identified n the title margin.<br><br> The Battle of Port Royal occurred on November 7th, 1861, and was one of the earliest amphibious operations of the Civil War. This battle comprised of a United States Navy fleet under command of Samuel Dupont and United States Army expeditionary force under command Gen. Thomas Sherman. This victory ended up with the capture Port Royal Sound, South Carolina The sound was guarded by two forts on opposite sides of the entrance, Fort Walker on Hilton Head Island to the south and Fort Beauregard on Phillip's Island to the north.
