DESCRIPTION: This portrait of Peeter Brugel, engraved in 1694 by Frederik Bouttats and published by Theodoor Galle in Antwerp, appears in The True Effigies of the Most Eminent Painters, a collection compiled by Sebastiano Resta. It depicts Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1525–1530 – 1569), the most influential figure of the Dutch and Flemish Renaissance. Bruegel was known for his vivid landscapes and unvarnished depictions of peasant life, helping to elevate both as worthy subjects of large-scale painting. His work broke from the elite and religious themes that had dominated art, turning instead to scenes of rural labor, village festivals, and natural settings with striking humanity and detail. This 17th-century engraving reflects the lasting esteem for Bruegel’s artistry.
