• DESCRIPTION: Head-and-shoulders portrait of Hayne Hudjihini, known as Eagle of Delight, an Oto woman and wife of Chief Shaumonekusse. She is shown with long black braids parted at center, white and black beaded ear loops, four necklaces, and a silver bracelet. A ruffled blouse and a fur or shawl drape loosely around her shoulders, one delicate hand visible. Hayne Hudjihini accompanied her husband to Washington D.C. in 1821, where her grace and beauty captivated those she met. Artist Charles Bird King painted her portrait during that visit; she died of measles soon after returning home. The lithograph preserves one of King’s lost Smithsonian paintings, most of which perished in an 1865 fire.
