  • DESCRIPTION: An original 18th-century copper-plate engraving from the 1778 French edition of Captain James Cook’s second voyage. Based on drawings by the expedition artist William Hodges and engraved by Robert Benard, this portrait depicts a woman and child of Tanna in the Vanuatu islands. The engraving illustrates the specific traditional adornments—including shell jewelry and the plantain-leaf head coverings—recorded in Cook’s journals during the HMS Resolution’s stay at Port Resolution in August 1774. This plate represents one of the earliest European visual records of Melanesian culture, produced for the Paris edition published at the Hotel de Thou.
