Engraved by the noted portraitist William Walker, the image is based on an 1847 miniature by Henry Pierce Bone, which was exhibited at the Royal Academy before entering the collection of the Geological Museum.

Sir Henry Thomas De la Beche is best known for professionalizing the study of geology by founding the Geological Survey of Great Britain in 1835, the world’s first national institution of its kind. As its first director, he moved the discipline beyond the uncoordinated efforts of wealthy amateurs, establishing the first rigorous standards for systematic geological mapping and field observation. He is also a foundational figure in paleontology for creating "Duria Antiquior" in 1830, which was the first pictorial reconstruction of prehistoric life based entirely on fossil evidence.
