  • DESCRIPTION: Rare lithograph after an on-the-spot drawing by Francis de la Porte, Comte de Castelnau, from his "Vues et Souvenirs de l'Amerique du Nord," published in Paris in 1842 and printed by Ludwig. This view of Fort Brady on Michigan's Lake Superior shows several buildings with a steamboat traveling towards the docks. Castelnau, a French traveler and explorer, toured the United States and Mexico between 1837 and 1841 to provide an objective sociological report on North American races. However, his greatest accomplishment turned out to be the charming and detailed views he included. Many are the earliest contemporary prints of the areas shown, especially for Florida, Georgia, and the Great Lakes.
